Weekend getaways are ideal for relaxing breaks from Hyderabad, located in the south Indian state of Telangana. Car rentals in Hyderabad are the best travel mode for weekend destinations because you can visit tourist attractions on the way. Here are four-weekend getaways:

Bidar is located in another south Indian state Karnataka. It is atop a picturesque hill on the Deccan plateau. Bidar is 144 to 147 km and 4 hours away by road from Hyderabad.

The 500-year-old Bidar Fort is another tourist hotspot. It has 30 famous tombs that are in and around the city. That is why Bidar is called the: “City of Whispering Monuments.”

There are various eateries and one popular tea stall near Sangareddy. At Bidar, you must taste Biriyanis. Summers (April-May) is too hot, over 40°C. Winter (Dec-Feb) temperature can dip to 11-12°C. Monsoon is around 26°C, but 85% humidity.

Shamirpet is a suburban town located in Telangana, and the headquarters of Medchal-Malkajgiri is very close to Hyderabad, around 23 km and 30 mins by taxi from the city center. Road travel from Shamirpet to Hyderabad Airport is about 1 hour and 34 minutes.

Its major tourist spots are Shamirpet lake, Jawahar Deer Park, Genome Valley, NALSAR University of Law, Institute of Public Enterprise, and BITS Pilani – Hyderabad.

The best time to visit is after the monsoons when the lake is water full. It is around 21°C in monsoons, with a humidity of 82%. It is too hot in summer like in Hyderabad. Winters are pleasant (29- 16°C)

Badami is a historic south Indian city. It is located in Karnataka, a neighboring state of Telangana. It became the capital of the Indian Badami Chalukya dynasty rule (540 to 757 AD). The road distance between Hyderabad and Badami is around 417 to 480 km, depending upon the routes you take:

  • NH 44: 8 h 58 min
  • Bachi – Raichur Hwy/Raichur – Bagalkote Rd: 9 h 36 min
  • NH65 and NH50: 9 h 29 min

Major tourist attractions are red sandstone rock cave temples, eighteen cave inscriptions, Agastya Lake, Dravidian Hindu architecture, and a famous mosque. Summer is hot (Mar-Jun, 23-45°C.). It is pleasant in Spring (Jan-March), Monsoons (July-Oct), and Winter (Nov-Jan). Winters and spring is the best time to visit with 15-9°C temperature and low humidity.

Gandikota is a village overlooking river Pennar in Andhra Pradesh, bordering Telangana. The riverscape makes it the Grand Canyon of India.

There are three road routes from Hyderabad:

  • NH 44: 6 h 56 min (371.7 km)
  • NH565: 9 h 30 min (467.5 km)
  • SH 5: 10 h 9 min (460.1 km)

It is famous for a fort built by the Kamma Kings, who ruled this area for around 300 years. Other hotspots are A Madhavaraya Swamy Temple and its architecture, a small Mosque over Kathula Koneru pond of swords, and a Charminar.

Best time to visit in winter. It is great for camping, trekking, and rock climbing.
