Taking care of teeth is important not only for oral health but for overall general health as well. Poor dental hygiene leads to various problems like tooth decay, bone loss, tartar, periodontics (gum diseases), thrush, and bad breath. So it is essential to maintain good oral health. Proper dental care protects your teeth from various gum diseases and medical problems like diabetes, keeping your teeth healthy in the long run. In addition to ensuring the teeth’ health, good oral care will also enhance your smile, making your teeth bright and white. Mere brushing your teeth twice a day is not enough for maintaining good oral hygiene. Here are some additional dental care tips for healthy teeth and a whiter smile.

Proper Brushing:

Even though brushing twice a day is necessary, brushing the teeth using proper techniques and the brush is equally important. Holding your brush at a 45degree angle and moving it back and forth and up and down strokes is considered the best technique for brushing your teeth. Try to look for a brush whose head and bristles are small enough to reach the places where food and debris tend to hide after eating. Brushing your teeth for two minutes is recommended as it removes plaque and bacteria from your mouth effectively. Also, don’t forget to replace your brush every 3 months. In addition to brushing your teeth, it is mandatory to brush your tongue and gums also. Getting gums brushed prevents gum diseases that may result in swollen gums and bleeding. Brushing the tongue helps to eliminate the bacteria that sits on the roof of the tongue and prevents the acid from building up in the mouth.

Flossing Effectively:

Like brushing, flossing should also be done at least once a day. Flossing removes food particles and detrimental substances stuck between gums and teeth and areas where the brush cannot reach. Flossing effectively using 18 inches of floss prevents plaque, cavities, and tooth decay. Flossing should be done smoothly so as not to harm the gums. You can also visit a general dentist and ask him to guide you on effective and smooth flossing.

Avoiding Dryness of the Mouth:

Water is essential not only for overall health but also for the production of saliva in the mouth. Saliva acts as a defense against tooth decay and gum diseases. To prevent various fatal diseases caused by dry mouth, it is recommendable to keep your mouth watery. Instead of consuming sugary drinks or alcohol, you can consume water. Unlike other drinks that will help in bacteria formation, water will prevent your teeth from decays and cavities by washing away the sugars and acids in your mouth.

Ensuring Teeth-Friendly Diet:

Avoid foods that have high levels of sugar in them. Sugar increases the amount of plaque in the mouth leading to tooth decay and cavities. Ensure that your diet has all the necessary supplements like calcium, iodine, iron, and zinc that will make your teeth strong and bones denser. Don’t forget to get a regular check-up and cleaning done by your dentist at least twice a year.
