Anxiety is something that strikes many people all over the world every day. Sometimes it can be a result of a deep worry about something that is going on in our lives which puts an extreme amount of pressure on us such as purchasing a new home, going through a divorce, or even starting a new job.

For others, the anxiety isn’t even warranted over something specific. It can just be a general feeling of uneasiness which makes them feel like they are losing control. This anxiety can lead to lack of reasoning or control and results in a full-blown panic attack. When this happens a lot of people don’t know what is happening to them. When you don’t realize that what is happening to you is a panic attack you can start to fear that you are dying. However, this is not the case. Panic attacks are incredibly common and can be controlled with the right tactics. Here is how.

Distract Yourself

One of the best things that you can do for yourself when you are starting to spiral out of control into a panic attack is to distract yourself from the feelings of distress altogether. When you start to feel these overwhelming waves of panic, rather than fixating on the reasons that are causing them, try to focus on something else entirely.

Put on a video of something that makes you feel happy or entertained. Let your mind rest and try to focus your energy on something else. This way you will stop the panic attack in its tracks before it can develop completely.

Call a Friend

When you start to feel the onset of a panic attack, don’t be afraid to reach out for help with a friend. Sometimes the very thing that we need is to ask someone to comfort us and simply let us know that we aren’t alone.

If someone is truly your friend that you trust then you shouldn’t feel uncomfortable about reaching out to them for help and comfort. Anxiety isn’t something to be embarrassed about. It’s a condition which can be harnessed with enough strength. Don’t let it take over your life out of shame of acknowledging it.

Consider Getting an Animal

Many people treat their anxiety by keeping an animal on hand which serves as a source of comfort when they need to turn to something in the face of panic. An animal is not only comforting but also loyal and kind. Some people opt for dogs and other opt for cats. At the end of the day, it comes down to whatever your preference is for feeling comforted.

Talk to your doctor about whether they think you might be a good candidate for an anxiety service animal.
