When to comes to purchasing a vehicle you don’t just walk into the dealership and pick a car to buy and drive away in. There are many steps you need to take. First, you need to have an idea of what you are looking for in a vehicle.

Then you’re going to want to test drive some vehicles, look at your budget and what kind of loans you can get. Then, and only then, will you discuss a final cost and buy a vehicle. When it comes to making the right choice, here are some questions to ask yourself.

What Are You Going To Do With It?

What is the purpose of having a vehicle for you? Is it to get to work or to drive the kids to softball practice? Or, do you need it for work?

If you want more than a personal car, you may want to look into something that is good on gas mileage. If you’re driving for Uber or Lyft you’ll need a vehicle that fits certain specifications. If you’re hauling equipment for a band or photography business, you want to make sure you get something that will fit all of your stuff in it.

How Many People Will Be Riding With You?

You need a vehicle that can fit all the people you’ll need it to fit. If you have a big family you won’t want something small and compact. However, if you’re single or have no children, and you usually go alone in your car, something smaller could be a great way to save money.

If you plan to use your vehicle for rideshare or Uber, you need to make sure you have more than space for two (which means no fancy sports cars). You may also want to ensure comfort in all those seats if you’ll be driving long distances with a car full.

How Much Stuff Will You Be Carrying?

If you’re not hauling people, you could be hauling other things. Maybe you run a lawn mowing business and need something that can safely haul a trailer. Maybe you run a moving business and need something that you can load things in and out of easily, and can hold larger items.

Even if you haul a good deal of stuff on a regular basis you could still consider a compact vehicle. Get something with a hatchback and fold down seats. Even a smaller Prius can fit a PA system and your guitar, plus some.

Do You Drive A Lot?

If you’re driving for work, to and from at a distance or to drive people where they need to go, you may want to look for a vehicle with great gas mileage. Consider a hybrid to save you some money on the road.

If you don’t drive much, you may still want to save. Instead of getting a large gas guzzling ride, get something more eco-friendly.
